Layers of bread crumbs and layers of chopped apples in pudding dish, seasoned with butter, sugar, and cinnamon or nutmeg. Pour over one cup water and bake. Serve with cream and sugar.

The Plymouth Cook Book
A while back, I bought a very old cookbook at a garage sale. It is chock full of recipes from 1906. The recipes may seem a little odd, but remember there were not a lot of households with electricity and refrigeration. Lard was used instead of vegetable shortening, and the FDA food pyramid was unheard of. Butter seems to be a major additive as is cream. I hope you enjoy these recipes as I add them to this blog.

Is it that simple? I think I have everything on hand :)
ReplyDeleteI believe it is, remember that these recipes are 103 years old! There are no temperature instructions on many of the recipes as I suspect many were written for "wood stoves". I've tried a few recipes and they are for the most part very tasty. I substitute vegetable shortening for lard if it is in a recipe. I've also done this recipe with apples and plums together!
